If you have obtained a senior leadership post, our congratulations. Please
email info@ascl.org.uk and let us know.
If you'd rather be taken off the mailing list, please email info@ascl.org.uk with 'unsubscribe ELN' in
the subject line. This newsletter comes out twice a term and you will also
occasionally receive ASCL publications that are relevant. See www.ascl.org.uk/emergingleaders

NEWS
Controlled assessments
JCQ has updated the booklet entitled Instructions for Conducting
Controlled Assessments and all teaching and exam staff responsible for
conducting or administering controlled assessments at GCSE are encouraged to
download a copy. The changes made to the 2009 document are highlighted in the
text which can be found at www.jcq.org.uk/exams_office/controlledassessments
One of the changes is the addition of a requirement for all centres to have a
policy on managing controlled assessments (paragraph 1.6). The QCDA website
has exemplar policies which can be adapted and a reference to the QCDA link
is in paragraph 1.6 of the JCQ document.
Changes to inspection
Secretary of State Michael Gove announced at the end of September that he
has asked Ofsted to scrap the current self-evaluation form (SEF), from
September 2011. The DfE said that it remains committed to self-evaluation but
schools will now be able to use their own approach to reviewing performance.
In the same speech, Michael Gove said that he intends for the next school
inspection framework to focus on four principal areas: the quality of
teaching, the effectiveness of leadership, pupils' behaviour and safety, and
pupils' achievement. He also requested that Ofsted no longer monitor
compliance issues. The changes are likely to appear in the upcoming education
bill. ASCL welcomed the move to a tighter focus within the inspection
process, but stressed that it must continue to be a process done with, rather
than to, schools.
School Teachers' Pay and Conditions
All four parts of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions 2010 document
are now available to view and download from the DfE publications website at publications.education.gov.uk
Although hard copies are not being sent to schools the DfE has informed us
that TSO are planning to print the 2010 STPCD and when it becomes available
will be on sale for £24.

RESOURCES
Effective CPD
Are you responsible for organising CPD in your faculty or team? Are you a
performance management reviewer who would like to support the reviewee by
recommending appropriate CDP? The TDA has some very useful guidance on how to
match CPD to individual and whole school needs, how to measure impact and how
to promote a culture of CPD. For all sections, go to www.tda.gov.uk/cpd-leader.
As a starting point, however, the section on Effective CPD is recommended –
go to www.tda.gov.uk/cpd-leader/effective-cpd
Coaching to improve learning and teaching
If you are interested in the latest research on coaching as a tool for
improvement, there is an easy to read and very informative publication on the
National College website titled Coaching for Teaching and Learning: a
Guide for School Leaders. This contains chapters on coaching models,
blockers, effective questioning, how to scaffold conversations and
determining impact. The most useful element of the publication is the
frequent use of examples, giving the reader techniques, and even phrases, to
use in coaching sessions. Visit www.nationalcollege.org.uk/coaching-for-teaching-and-learning
to download the document.
Behaviour management
Behaviour management is something most classroom teachers struggle with
from time to time. If there are new staff in your team, or you would like a
refresher of some behaviour management techniques, see the TES resource area.
There are a variety of resources sent in by readers to support behaviour
management with all students, not just those with specific difficulties. A
useful resource to give NQTs and cover assistants is the Top Ten Tips –
simple but effective ideas of which we all need reminding! Go to www.tes.co.uk/storycode=3006435
to download the document. On a more general note, the resources area of the
TES contains a wide range of helpful hints and guidance for all key stages
and abilities, submitted by teachers for teachers. Well worth a look.
Write Now competition
Students in years 10-13 have a chance to visit Number 10 and the House of
Commons, and meet MPs and journalists, through the Write Now competition from
the Parliamentary Press Gallery. To participate, students are asked to write
a political blog or an email to party supporters of no more than 500 words.
Entries are accepted from individuals, or teachers can use the competition as
a whole class exercise and submit multiple entries from the same school.
Regional winners will spend one day in the spring in Whitehall, where the
overall winners will be announced, and overnight accommodation is provided.
The deadline is Thursday 11 November. Details are on the website at www.writenow.org.uk.
Your suggestions
If you come across helpful resources that you think other emerging
leaders would like to know about, please email Melanie Siddell at mjs@htcs.org.uk and she will compile them
for the next edition of the newsletter.
