This is the newsletter of ASCL’s Emerging Leaders Network, for ambitious middle leaders who have their sights on one day becoming senior leaders. You’ve received this because you are on the mailing list for the network.

If you have obtained a senior leadership post, our congratulations. Please email info@ascl.org.uk and let us know. If you'd rather be taken off the mailing list, please email info@ascl.org.uk with 'unsubscribe ELN' in the subject line. This newsletter comes out twice a term and you will also occasionally receive ASCL publications that are relevant. See www.ascl.org.uk/emergingleaders for details.

NEWS

GCSE results summer 2010
You will be aware that GCSE results are being released this summer in electronic form only to centres on Monday 23 August and that centres can then release results to students on Tuesday 24 August. JCQ has a document on its website entitled Updated Notice and Advice to Centres, Release of GQ Results - June 2010 Examinations. This will be sent in hard copy to all centres between 2-6 July but you can access copies at JCQ - release of results June 2010.pdf The document contains good advice on how to deal with the change to the normal publication of results; all staff involved in the release of results, giving guidance to students following results or handling admissions to colleges post-16, will find it useful. The document contains advice to colleges and there should be no reason for colleges not to accept a print out of results as evidence of GCSE attainment.

From November 2010 all results for general qualifications will be provided to centres in electronic form only. JCQ has also sent out a document which explains this change, Notice to Centres, Release of Results from November 2010 Onwards, which can be accessed at JCQ e-results.pdf

Summer examinations 2012
You are probably also aware that there will be an additional bank holiday on Tuesday 5 June 2012 for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and that the school year will therefore be reduced to 189 days for 2011-12. It is being assumed by JCQ and the awarding bodies that half-term week will be taken during the week beginning 4 June (which contains the two bank holidays) and that exams will be timetabled during the three weeks before half-term and the three weeks after half-term.

RESOURCES

Effective middle leadership
Are you looking to develop your middle leader skills or are you responsible for developing future middle leaders? The National College website contains an excellent section on middle leadership. Apart from defining what middle leadership is, the section looks at effective middle leadership and how to develop others. Exploring the ‘leadership’ area of the website will give you access to resources on understanding leadership styles and effective school leadership. To access the middle leadership section, go to nationalcollege.org.uk/middle-leadership.htm

Induction of new staff
If you are responsible for inducting new staff starting in your team or department in September, take a look at the TDA website’s section on ‘Designing induction for your school’. There are articles on what to include in a welcome pack, designing a core programme and how to meet the needs of every individual, together with details of the statutory guidance on induction. This will prove useful to any leader, whether or not you are responsible for whole-school induction. You can find the resources at tda.gov.uk/leaders/supportstaff/induction

National initiatives
How much do you know about whole school national initiatives? As an emerging leader, you should have a basic awareness, if not knowledge of, whole school drives and initiatives. A good one to start with is SEAL - social and emotional aspects of learning (or SSEAL, for ‘secondary’). Find out about the purpose of SSEAL and how it can change the way you and your teams interact and communicate with people adults and children at nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/behaviourattendanceandseal You will find a range of resources to use in the classroom, with stakeholders and for training purposes.

Students as lesson observers
ASCL’s July Leader magazine features two articles on lesson observations – one on what makes an ‘outstanding’ lesson and one on schools that are involving students as lesson observers. Case studies from several schools outline the benefits and potential ‘blockers’ for such an approach to lesson observation. This would be particularly interesting for heads of departments or individuals who wish to develop student voice within their subject areas. The article can be found at www.leadermagazine.co.uk

Your suggestions
If you come across helpful resources that you think other emerging leaders would like to know about, please email Melanie Siddell at mjs@htcs.org.uk and she will compile them for the next edition of the newsletter.
